Fray Dice
Introduction
The purpose of Fray Dice is to provide player characters of a sufficiently high level to level the playing field when out numbered by lower powered creatures. This allows the players to effectively fight off large groups of minions, or Lesser Foes, without expending their limited number of actions.
Rules
Defining a Lesser Foe
By default, lesser foes are defined by the character level, as in the table below. Specific changes may be made by the Dungeon Master to tailor each encounter to their desired difficulty. Lesser Foes will typically be noted to the players, but may be kept hidden at the Dungeon Master's disgression.
| Character Level | Lesser Foe CR |
|---|---|
| 0 - 3 | - |
| 4 - 10 | Under 1 |
| 11 - 15 | Under 2 |
| 15 - 19 | Under 3 |
| 20 | Under 4 |
Gaining Fray Dice
Each character who's proficiency bonus is 3 or more gains a Fray Die based on their class, according to the table below:
| Fray Die | Classes | Monster size |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | - | Tiny |
| 1d4 | Sorcerer, wizard | Small |
| 1d6 | Artificer, bard, cleric, druid, monk, rogue, warlock | Medium |
| 1d8 | Fighter, paladin, ranger | Large |
| 1d10 | Barbarian | Huge |
| 1d12 | — | Gargantuan |
Note: Multiclass characters take the Fray Tokens for their highest level class. Equal classes take the higher Fray Token from the above table.d
How to use Fray Dice
At the start of a character's turn, they may choose to roll their Fray Die. They may kill up to this die roll's number of Lesser Foes within melee range.
